Have your heard of oil pulling? Its a technique that involves swishing certain varieties of oil in the mouth and, although its been around for a while, its recently gained recognition. Its not something your dentist will typically recommend but the real question is, does it work?

Oil Pulling
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that has gained popularity in the last decade due to celebrity endorsements. Oil pulling is claimed to be able provide breath freshening, teeth whitening, mouth and gum tissue detoxification, and reduced inflammation related to eczema, arthritis, and gum disease. This process involves swishing the mouth for 20 minutes with high quality oil such as coconut, sunflower, or grapeseed oil. Many people rave about the effects of oil pulling but is really all that celebrities and Youtubers claim it to be?

No Replacement for Dental Hygiene
The recommendation from dentists is unanimous: oil pulling cannot replace regular dental hygiene. However, this treatment is not typically discouraged alongside your regular hygiene regiment. The act of swishing oil through the teeth grabs and isolates particles, bacteria, and other microbes similar to the effects of mouthwash. Although its safe to do during pregnancy, it’s recommended that children do not. If oil is accidentally inhaled or swallowed it can cause more serious issues such as lipoid pneumonia. 

Some claim that oil pulling has the ability to heal tooth decay, which is false. Tooth decay is preventable with fluoride but, once it has developed, is irreversible. There is no proof that oil pulling is a cure-all for various ailments, but it can help improve your oral health in tandem with regular brushing and flossing.
